About Us

AIM OF THE COUNCIL

We pursue with absolute commitment, the tenets of the Kaiama Declaration and promote the unity and progress of the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality

The Ijaw Youth Council has produced several notable leaders who have played significant roles in Nigerian politics and the Niger Delta struggle. The organizations leadership is influential in local and national politics and its decisions can impact the broader sociopolitical landscape in the Niger delta.

Today the IYC continues to be a vocal advocate for Ijaw people and Niger delta, engaging in dialogues with government and stakeholders to address the ongoing challenge of the region. The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide currently led by Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri as president remains a key player in the socio-political dynamics of Nigeria, particularly in the context of the Niger Delta’s ongoing struggles for environmental justice and resource control.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COUNCIL

  • To promote and enhance the sustainable economic progress of the Ijaw and of the Ijaw people everywhere.
  • To reaffirm the aims and objectives of the Ijaw National Congress.
  • To focus, coordinate and be the mouthpiece of Ijaw youths within and outside the territory of Nigeria
  • To establish and complement the efforts of organizations involved in development within Ijaw land.
  • To encourage institutions, communities, student associations and social groups affiliated to Ijaw people through joint advocacy, donations and other
    awards, where necessary.
  • To advocate for, and promote the education, health, livelihood, wellbeing and security of Ijaw people.
