On Monday, the Revered President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, received in his office Barrister Theresa Ebi Tobuyei, Esq., and her team. The visit was both cordial and inspiring, as Barrister Tobuyei presented two remarkable books she authored works. Alongside the presentation, she extended a warm invitation to the President to attend a special program taking place this Sunday, designed to celebrate and Young people.
In her remarks, Barrister Tobuyei explained the vision and passion that guided her writing, emphasizing the need to preserve the narratives of the Ijaw people for posterity. She noted that through literature, communities can connect to their roots, strengthen cultural identity, and inspire the next generation. The upcoming Sunday program, she added, would be a platform to share these stories and inspire conversations about heritage, resilience, and unity and the younger generation.
Responding, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri commended the author for the “great feat” of producing such meaningful works and for telling a beautiful story about the Ijaw Nation and her people. He expressed concern, however, that many young people today no longer read books, warning that the reading culture is gradually fading away. He stressed that reading is not just an academic exercise but a vital tool for intellectual growth, creativity, and critical thinking qualities that are essential for the progress of any community.

While acknowledging the benefits of technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence, Sir Jonathan cautioned that such innovations should never outrightly replace the human brain. He urged for a balanced approach, where technology supports but does not diminish the value of deep thinking, reflection, and learning through books. Calling on parents, schools, and community leaders, he advocated for a deliberate revival of reading culture among young people, so that the Ijaw Nation continues to produce leaders, thinkers, and storytellers who will carry its legacy forward.
