United in Diversity, Stronger in Unity IYC President Calls for Peace, Equity, and Development as Nigeria Turns 65 and Bayelsa Marks 29 Years

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, under the leadership of its Revered President, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, joins millions of Nigerians and the good people of Bayelsa State in commemorating two significant milestones: Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary and Bayelsa State’s 29th anniversary of creation.

This historic occasion offers the opportunity to celebrate our collective journey, reflect on the promise of our young democracy, and renew our commitment to peace, equity, and sustainable development. For the Ijaw Nation, it is also a moment to reaffirm our central place in Nigeria’s ongoing narrative, given our rich contributions to the nation’s economy, culture, and identity.

Message to the Ijaw Youth

To Ijaw youths across Nigeria and in the diaspora, I extend a solemn exhortation: remain law-abiding, exceptionally industrious, and deeply committed to education. The future of our land rests in your hands. As the bearers of tomorrow’s hope, you must stay focused, disciplined, and resilient in the face of adversity. Our renaissance depends on your collective energy, skills, and moral integrity.

On Recent Tragedies

The recent tragic incidents in Bayelsa State, where two promising Ijaw youths Mr. Richard Ekpebu and Ms. Alari Matilda were allegedly murdered, remain a painful wound to our people and the IYC. These heinous acts are a setback to the values we stand for.

While we advise our youths to shun violence and crime, the IYC under my leadership will strengthen collaboration with security agencies to ensure that perpetrators of such acts face the full weight of the law. Justice must be served not only to honor the memories of the deceased but also to serve as deterrence to others.

We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray that God grants them the strength to endure this trying time.

The Call for Equity and Development

The Ijaw Nation, strategically positioned in the Niger Delta, sustains Nigeria’s oil and gas economy while enduring ecological degradation, infrastructure neglect, and social disinvestment. It is only fair and just that the Federal Government accords priority attention to the holistic development of our region from education, healthcare, and infrastructure to environmental remediation and inclusive resource governance.

At the same time, I salute the Government of Bayelsa State for its efforts in uplifting our people and urge continued focus on improving educational infrastructure, expanding clean water access, protecting the environment, fostering industrialization and agricultural value chains, and creating jobs for our youth.

A Call to National Unity

As we mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day and Bayelsa’s 29th anniversary, let this dual celebration serve as a renewed commitment by governments, communities, and young people alike to build a Nigeria where every region is not just a resource base, but a thriving contributor to national harmony and growth.

Let us move forward with unity, courage, and purpose, guided by the unshakable belief that a brighter future is not only possible but within reach.
