The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide held a highly successful National Convention at Ijaw House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, yesterday. The convention, which was attended by all structures of the council, including the National Executive Council, Mobile Parliament, Zonal Leaderships, Clan Structures, Critical Stakeholders, and Ijaw youths from across the nation, aimed to review and amend certain clauses in the IYC Constitution.

Under the leadership of Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, the National President of IYC, the convention deliberated on and passed several key resolutions. These include the adoption of the Open Secret Ballot System for voting, replacing Option A4; the review of the age bracket for elective offices to 45 years and Adhoc Committees to 50 years; and the introduction of the Office of Persons Living with Disabilities Representative in both National and Zonal Leadership structures.

Additionally, the convention approved the representation of the UK Chapter with 6 delegates in national elections. These amendments to the IYC Constitution, reviewed and adopted at Odi in 2025, are binding on all Ijaw youths and IYC members.

The National Convention, being the highest decision-making body of the IYC, demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and youth empowerment through these amendments. The event concluded on a successful and peaceful note.

In a related development, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr led members of the council to inspect the ongoing IYC Secretariat Complex, Training, and ICT Centre projects. This move underscores the leadership’s dedication to infrastructural development and capacity building within the organization.
