Yenagoa, Bayelsa โ The transition toward a new era for the Ijaw nation reached a definitive milestone today at the iconic Ijaw House Yenagoa, as the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, officially inaugurated the Chairman and members of the National Electoral Committee.
This formal ceremony follows a rigorous legislative session where the IYC Mobile Parliament, led by Rt. Hon. Gabriel Allen screened and ratified the nominees yesterday. With this inauguration, the machinery for the 2026 National Elections has been officially set in motion, drawing the attention of Ijaw stakeholders globally.
At the heart of this transition is a carefully selected team of representatives from across the IYCโs expansive reach. President Lokpobiri emphasized regional inclusion by swearing in Dr. Charles Ikimi as the Chairman of the National Electoral Committee. Joining him are Mr. Napoleon Kenerekedi and Comr. Icon James Tam from the Western Zone, as well as Rt. Hon. Digimie Eldred Pogonye and Comr. Mitin Gesikeme from the Central Zone. The Eastern Zone is represented by Comr. Bristol Emmanuel Alagbarua and Comr. Micah A. Micah, while Comr. Fiyebo Eperetei and Comr. Minasigha Bluejack stand for the Lagos and Abuja Chapters respectively.
The ceremony was highlighted by the formal presentation of the IYC Constitution (Odi) to the committee. This sacred document will serve as the absolute roadmap for the upcoming electoral process, ensuring that every step taken aligns with the long-standing laws of the Ijaw people.
Addressing the newly sworn-in officials, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr expressed unwavering confidence in the professional capacity and moral standing of the committee. He delivered a stern charge to the team, advising them to work in total unison and to fiercely protect the process from any external pressures. His message was clear: the Ijaw nation demands an election that stands as a model of credibility.
In a poised and resolute acceptance speech, Dr. Charles Ikimi extended his gratitude to the Ijaw Youths for the immense trust placed in his leadership. He assured the Council that the committee would operate with a high sense of neutrality, making integrity the cornerstone of their mission. Dr. Ikimi emphasized that the IYC Constitution (Odi) would be their only compass. He issued a direct call to all prospective aspirants and interested parties to meticulously study the constitution, ensuring they are on a firm legal footing before launching their campaigns to serve the Ijaw Youths.
The inauguration was witnessed by a high-powered delegation of IYC leaders, signaling the institutional support behind this electoral body.
