Delta State High Court Restrains Postponement of IYC National Elections, Affirms Constitutional Electoral Process

The High Court of Justice, Delta State, Warri Judicial Division, has issued an Enrolment of Order in Suit No. W/THC/WBR/CV/13/2026 concerning the leadership and electoral process of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC).

The suit, instituted by Comr. Ingbesekumo Oyas David, challenges the planned or attempted derogation from the provisions of the Ijaw Youth Council Constitution 2024 as they relate to the conduct of the 2026 National Executive Council Elections.

In its ruling, the Court granted interim orders restraining the first set of defendants from postponing the IYC National Elections, scheduled to hold on 10th and 11th July 2026, beyond the constitutional timeline pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

The Court further directed that no individual, group, or body, other than the 2026 Electoral Committee duly constituted by the first set of defendants, shall conduct or supervise the IYC National Elections.

These interim orders are aimed at preserving the constitutional framework of the Council, maintaining the status quo, and ensuring that the 2026 National Elections are conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the IYC Constitution while the substantive issues before the Court are being determined.

Members of the Ijaw Youth Council, stakeholders, delegates, and the general public are hereby urged to take note of and fully comply with the directives of the Court.

Respect for the rule of law and unwavering adherence to the Constitution of the Ijaw Youth Council remain fundamental to safeguarding the credibility, integrity, transparency, and peaceful conduct of the 2026 National Executive Council Elections.
