Congratulations To The 9th NEC A Beacon Of Hope And Model Of Service Is Two Years Today
The 9th National Executive Council (NEC) of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) under the visionary leadership of Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr has, despite formidable challenges, delivered unprecedented progress in just two years. Revolutionary movements often face internal and external pressures that test their resolve, especially when it comes to leadership and unification of purpose. Yet, the current leadership has risen above the noise, setting a new benchmark in advocacy, youth empowerment, and institutional development. Their work reflects not just bold ambition but a clear strategy aimed at transforming the fortunes of the Ijaw Nation through purposeful engagement and tangible outcomes.
A notable achievement within the first year was the facilitation of international exposure for Ijaw youths through diaspora engagements geared toward knowledge acquisition. This bold step signifies a leadership that understands the value of global thinking and the need for Ijaw youths to be equipped with the right tools to compete and contribute meaningfully on the global stage. Additionally, the revisitation of the historic Kaiama Declaration, a cornerstone document in the Ijaw struggle, shows a deep respect for the sacrifices of past heroes while reaffirming the ideological foundation of the Council. This act of homage rekindles the original spirit of the IYC and reconnects the present generation to its revolutionary roots.
Institutionally, the Council under Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri has solidified its foundation by adopting the Council’s Constitution, albeit with minor grey areas such as Option A4, which will need to be addressed in due course. Beyond documents, the Council’s capacity has been bolstered by physical developments such as the ongoing construction of the Secretariat building an important symbol of permanence and progress. Similarly, the monthly subvention extended to all Council structures, including the revered Elders Council, is historic and signals a commitment to inclusion, sustainability, and responsible governance. This initiative promotes financial stability and operational efficiency within the Council.
Furthermore, the Council’s increased engagements with Niger Delta interventionist agencies, especially regarding infrastructural projects like the East-West Road, and the facilitation of job placements for Ijaw youths in oil companies, highlight a leadership attuned to the socio-economic needs of its people. These interventions are not only easing long-standing burdens but also reinforcing the Council’s relevance in regional politics and governance. Today, the Ijaw Youth Council, under the steady guidance of Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, holds its rightful place among its peers, earning both respect and admiration. Congratulations to the 9th NEC a beacon of hope and model of service.
