IYC Condemns Brutal Murder of Ijaw Youth, Calls for Justice and Cooperation with Security Agencies
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide expresses deep shock and sadness over the brutal murder of 42-year-old Richard Ekpebu, an Ijaw youth whose life was senselessly cut short. We condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms.
According to the Nigerian Police Force, Mr. George Idumangi has been alleged as the perpetrator of this crime. While acknowledging that Mr. Idumangi had previously served in some committee capacities under our immediate past zonal leadership, we wish to categorically state that he holds no position in our current leadership structure.
The IYC is a reputable organization known for its peaceful advocacy against the oppression of the Ijaw people. Our founding philosophy remains rooted in peace, justice, unity, and development. While we recognize that, like any institution, criminal elements may sometimes infiltrate our ranks, such individuals do not represent the values of the IYC.
The late Mr. Ekpebu was a promising Ijaw youth engaged in legitimate business, and we share in the pain and grief of his family, friends, and community. Nobody has the right to take the life of another, and the IYC will fully support the police in their efforts to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragedy and ensure that justice is served as a deterrent to others.
We commend the Nigerian Police Force for their swift action in arresting the alleged perpetrator, George Idumangi, and his accomplice. We call on our members and the general public to cooperate with the police, allowing them to carry out their work professionally and bring all perpetrators to justice.
The IYC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting peace, security, and development in our communities. We remain resolute in our pursuit of justice and equality for all Ijaw people.
Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr
President
Ijaw Youth Council
(IYC) Worldwide.
