The heart of the Niger Delta beat as one today as thousands of Ijaw youths flooded the streets of Yenagoa, the Jerusalem of Ijaw Nation in a powerful display of unity and remembrance.
ย
In a striking procession that drew participants from across the entire Ijaw Nation, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, led the 9th National Executive Council and Ijaw youths to commemorate the 58th Annual Celebration of Major General Isaac Adaka Boroโ the revered Liberator of the Ijaw people and Father of the Niger Delta Struggle for Resource Control and Emancipation.
ย
The solemn yet vibrant procession kicked off at Tombia and culminated at the iconic Ijaw House in Yenagoa, with participants dressed in symbolic attire, chanting solidarity songs, and waving flags that echoed the spirit of Boroโs sacrifice. The event transformed the Bayelsa capital into a sea of Ijaw pride as young men and women marched shoulder to shoulder, honoring the man who gave his life for the emancipation of the Ijaw people.
ย
Addressing the massive crowd during the procession, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr expressed deep gratitude to Ijaw youths for their โunwavering commitment and enthusiasm to always come out in their numbers to celebrate the Hero of the Ijaw Nation.โ
ย
In a poignant moment, the IYC President revealed that this would be his last Boro Day celebration as President of Council, with his 3-year tenure set to wind down later this year.
ย
โThis is the very last Boro Day I will witness as your President,โ Lokpobiri declared, drawing cheers and reflective silence from the crowd. โBut the struggle Boro started lives on in every one of you.โ
He further reassured the Ijaw Nation of his dedication to ensuring a โhitch-free and transparent transition processโ that will usher in new leadership for the Council, pledging to uphold the integrity of the IYC as his administration concludes.
ย
Todayโs procession was more than a memorial โ it was a statement. At a time when indigenous movements worldwide are demanding equity, resource justice, and self-determination, the Ijaw youthโs tribute to Isaac Adaka Boro resonates far beyond the Niger Delta. Itโs a reminder of how one manโs sacrifice 58 years ago continues to inspire a generation fighting for identity, dignity, and control of their destiny.
ย
Major General Isaac Adaka Boroโs legacy โ his bold stand for resource control and emancipation in the 1960s โ remains a cornerstone of Niger Delta advocacy and a symbol of resistance recognized across Africa and beyond.
